I had an interesting conversation this evening with a friend who I have loaned my NW/STWOM books to. She made an interesting observation and I am trying to remember if this is true...because I think it may be.
At the end of NW, didn't Sloan's mother get together with Douglas? It has been awhile since I read this story.
If that is the case, didn't Courtney state in STWOM that her father has married someone else who was her age or somthing along that line.
If this is true, then I have to admit I am sad. And, I cannot believe I didn't catch that before. I would hate for Sloan's mother to not have been happy.
Thanks for your help.

I believe in STWOM, Courtney's reference to her father's marriage to someone her age was made in the past tense. It was during a conversation she was having with Leigh's colleague, Jason.
quote:..."And do you have any other brothers or sisters?"
"No, but my father has had four wives, so I'm sure he tried."
It must have been terribly lonely for you growing up," he said sympathetically.
"Not at all. Two of my father's wives were nearly as young as I was. I played with them."

I firmly believe that Kimberly Reynolds & Douglas Maitland are happy. I think Courtney was being flippant. Remember Leigh noticed Courtney had a "genius IQ and absolutely no social inhibitions about saying whatever it took to shock her adversary into speechlessness".
Here is the quote from Night Whispers paperback on Page 214:
quote: In that short time, Sloan learned an amazing amount about both men from Courtney, including the fact that Noah had been married for three years to someone named Jordanna, who had supposedly soured him on marriage, and that two of Douglas's wives had been Sloan's age . Courtney gave her father absolutely no quarter, and he let her get away with it, but Noah had limits, Sloan noticed, and those limits evidently involved his work.

Thanks for help. Without the books, I couldn't remember exactly what was said.
I, too, wanted to firmly believe that Douglas and Kimberly were happily married, too.

Courtney was referring to one of Douglas's ex-wives who she also told Sloan about in NW.
I recently received an invitation to a surprise birthday party that Douglas is giving for Kimberly at the Palm Beach Club, so I can assure you they are still married, and very happily. A friend of mine who knows the whole family told me that Douglas has borne up well under all the ribald teasing he's received from his male friends over his impending fatherhood. It's a girl, by the way.
I had a note from Courtney two months ago, and she told me she'd finally decided on just the right surprise gift for her baby sister. She's ordered a custom-built "baby Bentley." In purple. It will be delivered on her sister's second birthday.
Courtney said she was certain her baby sister would have preferred a baby Ferrari or Aston-Martin, but Douglas has been nagging her to be practical lately, so Courtney let safety influence her decision. Evidently, Bentley's are built like steel tanks, or so she said. Then too, Bentleys have miniature refigerators concealed behind the back seat arm rests--which Courtney felt would be a handy place for her sister to keep a spare baby bottle.
I wrote Courtney back and suggested, as gently as I could, that perhaps she had spent a little too much money for a gift her sister would outgrow in a year or two.
She sent me a note back that said,
quote:That's what Noah said, too, but I'd already thought of that, which is why I ordered her the Azure model. When she's gets too big, she can put the convertible top down.
Just call me 'Ms. Practicality' from now on.
